ThE History of Madison Diner
Built in 1948 by the Fodero dining car company
This diner was built in 1948 by the Fodero Dining Car Company. It was originally located on a street corner in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania (a suburb north of Philadelphia) where it was owned and operated by Harry and Marge Muchnick under the name Willow Grove Diner.
Bainbridge locals are the diner’s current caretakers
After new ownership and sitting on a vacant lot for many years, Al Packard - a Bainbridge Island resident and classic East Coast style diner aficionado, bought it in 1996. The diner was completely disassembled in pieces, numbered, and shipped across the country to Bainbridge Island where it was lovingly restored on this site. In 1997, Al Packard and his family reopened the diner under the name Blue Water Diner.
To this day, people write & visit from Willow Grove, PA.
Third-generation Bainbridge locals are the diner’s current caretakers, ”We take the responsibility of running it, maintaining it and paying homage to its history very seriously. Our goal is to provide quality and locally sourced home-cooked meals that appeal to a variety of tastes, while remaining true to American diner classics.”
To this day, the diner has people write and visit from Willow Grove, PA. The diner was part of many childhood memories, and we hope to create more special memories for the generations to come.
Fun and delicious breakfast
"We visited the Madison Diner on a cold January rainy morning. We were pleasantly surprised to see the train car style diner on Madison Avenue and the retro style of the inside. We were quickly seated, our breakfast was served in a timely manner and it was delicious! The walk from the ferry building was a bit further than some of the other breakfast options but we were happy with our decision."
Great start to the day
"We are from Texas and visiting family. Needed a solid breakfast to start us on a day full of activities. With two teen boys, this was a priority. We really enjoyed our breakfast. Service was good, food was hot, and it was within walking distance to the Saturday Farmers market. Greatness!!!"
